Ahmadiyya Muslims sweep Surrey streets clean on New Year’s Day

Many New Year’s revellers across Surrey were likely feeling a little worse for wear on Wednesday (January 1).

The same cannot be said for the region’s industrious Ahmadiyya Muslim community, however.

During the bank holiday, Ahmadiyya volunteers of all ages helped sweep the streets of towns throughout North and East Surrey clean after the night’s festivities.

Ahmadiyya volunteers from Epsom, Ewell, Malden Manor, Old Malden, Worcester Park, Stoneleigh, Surbiton, Berrylands and Tolworth all joined in with the street clean up.

“Our members have enjoyed living in Surrey for decades and so any opportunity to help our local Community is a much-welcomed one,” Ashan said.

“Cleaning our streets also presents us with an opportunity to become better Muslims as cleanliness is an integral part of our faith.

“Giving up a couple of hours can make a huge difference.

“We are a peace-loving and well-organised association which will continue to help make this great part of England an even better place to live in,” he added.

The youth wing of the Ahmadiyya community said that their volunteers were involved in a number of other actions over the holiday period.

AMYA volunteers collected money for the British Red Cross, visited Children’s hospitals and Nursing homes — giving them chocolates and gifts — and donated food to the homeless and vulnerable on Christmas Day.
