May fundraiser makes Christmas extra special
Christmas brought local charities a share of £20,000 raised through the 2022 Charity Walk for Peace. The annual fundraiser is organised in partnership between East Hampshire District Council, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Elder Association and Whitehill & Bordon Community Trust. Among the 16 East Hampshire causes to benefit were five from Petersfield and nearby – Dementia Friends Petersfield, The Petersfield School, Attenborough Explorer Scout Unit based in Clanfield, Petersfield-based Rural Refugee Network, and Age Concern Petersfield.
The walk last May saw more than 250 walkers step out along a 5km route through Hogmoor Inclosure in Bordon and around the town. The charities that took part in the day each received £1,250 each to put towards their community work. EHDC deputy leader and portfolio holder for community Integration Cllr Julie Butler said: “It is fantastic that we have managed to raise £20,000 to share between these great causes through the biggest walk we have done. “I am so proud to have worked alongside the Ahmadiyya Muslim Elder Association on the project for the past few years.
“They are so hard working but they are so humble and day in, day out they are out there raising money for charities. “They are making lives better for people who live in our communities.” Regional president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Elders Association Zakariyya Choudry added: “Charity is one of five pillars of the Islamic faith. “Helping our neighbours and anyone in need is an essential part of our practice as Muslims.“We are delighted that in 2022 we raised the highest total to date thanks to the generosity of our donors.”
The remaining charities which received a donation were the Deadwater Valley Trust in Bordon, Alton Climate Action Network, Havant and East Hants Mind, Harlequins Gymnastics, The Vokes Trust, HomeStart Hampshire, The Happy Healing Hut, Whitehill and Bordon Community Trust, Disability Challengers, The Kingsley Organisation and Artscape.
