Western Europe’s Largest Mosque Hosts Big Iftar Dinner

In the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims the world over are fasting and placing a special emphasis on prayers, A special Big Iftar” Dinner was held with a large number of friends and neighbours Government supported initiative to promote understanding and social cohesion in the UK. Several mosques of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in the UK participated and hosted this event. The main event was held at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in south London, where approximately 600 people including friends, neighbours, faith representatives councillors and police were present.

The proceedings started with a recitation of the Holy Quran by Imam Ataul Qudus Arif.

The National President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, Rafiq Ahmad Hayat explained the basic teachings and blessings of the holy month of Ramadan and that the Holy Quran was revealed during this blessed month. He also discussed how the concept of fasting can be seen in all religions as explained by different prophets. He also explained how fasting offers benefits for ones health. The Leader of Merton Council, Stephen Alambritis also spoke and wished a happy Ramadan to all the Muslims and explained the blessings of Ramadan in how meals are shared thereby bringing people closer. Stephen also spoke of how he used to fast in his childhood.

The event was also the venue for the first public engagement of Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, newly appointed Minister at the Department for Communities and Local Government. Lord Ahmad explained thanked Prime Minister David Cameron for noting the work of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in his Ramadan message. The proceedings ended with silent prayer followed by a meal.
